PELVIS AND HIP INJURIES CAUSED BY AUTO ACCIDENTSA pelvic or hip injury can be severely disabling. These types of injuries can occur as a result of a direct hit, a severe twisting motion, or even the compression type motion that is common in trip and fall accidents and car accidents.
The hip joint connects the thigh bone to the pelvis and is the body’s largest weight-bearing joint. It consists of a ball at the top of the femur and a socket on the side of the pelvis that works in tandem to allow movement. This process, like all joints, is dependent on the cushioning of fluid-filled sacs. All of the components of your hip must work effectively together to allow for comfortable movement, and an accident can obstruct this movement in a variety of ways.
Labral tear. A labral tear can be caused by trauma to the hip, such as in a car accident, a bad fall, or falling directly onto the hip. The labrum is a fibrocartilage rim that surrounds and stabilizes the hip joint. This cartilage type seals the joint, deepens the socket, and protects the joint by reducing the forces transmitted to the joint. A labrum tear can cause pain in the front of the hip, the groin, or the side of the hip. Walking, pivoting, or impact activities such as running usually aggravate the pain. The pain can also occur at night and be accompanied by clicking, catching, or locking. Labral tears usually occur as a result of a traumatic event, such as a car accident or a fall.
Avascular necrosis. Avascular necrosis is a type of bone death that occurs when the blood supply to the bones is reduced or terminated. Without an adequate blood supply, the bone deteriorates, dies, and collapses. If the affected bone is close to a joint, the joint may also collapse. Avascular necrosis can affect any bone, but it most commonly affects the ends of long bones, such as the upper leg bone at the hip.
Avascular necrosis can be caused by an injury, such as a forceful impact in a car accident or a complication of a hip fracture or dislocation.
Bursitis. Bursitis is a common injury following blunt force trauma, such as a car accident, in which the fluid-filled sacs become inflamed and cause severe pain. This can be difficult to diagnose and is frequently felt sometime after the initial impact, so it is critical that an orthopedic doctor diagnose the condition. While rest and ice are typically used to treat bursitis, more severe cases may necessitate physical therapy, steroid injections, or even surgery.
Gluteus medius tears. A gluteus medius tear is a condition in which the gluteus medius muscle is severely strained, resulting in partial or complete rupture of the muscle.
The gluteus medius is a major hip muscle that is responsible for lower-body movement and keeping the pelvis level during ambulation. The gluteus medius muscle arises from the top of the pelvic bone and connects to the thigh bone or femur at the greater trochanter via the gluteus medius tendon. The muscle acts as a hip abductor, controlling hip movement from side to side and stabilizing the joint. Gluteus medius tears are common at the tendinous attachment to the femoral bone’s greater trochanter.
A high-energy injury, such as a car accident, can cause an acute onset.
Hip fractures. The most common type of accident injury is a fracture of the hip socket or other parts of the joint. An accident’s blunt force trauma can also fracture surrounding bones, which are then forced into the hip, obstructing its ability to move properly. These fractures can be difficult and painful to treat, necessitating major surgery or even hip replacement. Hip joints can also be dislocated, which usually heals without the need for invasive procedures but can be painful following an accident.
Types of serious fractures and dislocations to the hip include:
- Femoral neck fractures.
- Pelvis fractures.
- Hip dislocations.
