If you have been injured in a car accident there are several things you need to do. The following is a checklist to help guide you after you have been involved in an auto accident with injuries: 

1) At the scene of the accident you need to: 

a) Check yourself for injuries immediately after the accident. The shock of an unexpected accident can cause your adrenaline to pump and often people are unaware of their injuries at first. Check yourself to make sure how severe your injuries are. Next you need to check on your passengers to see if they are ok. Check on the occupants in the other vehicles to see if they need help, they may have injuries and need assistance. If anyone is hurt then get help immediately. 

b) Call 911. If you are injured, or if anyone is injured, you need to have the police and emergency services come to the scene to assist. 

c) Get witness information. If there are any witnesses to the accident get their contact information immediately. Witnesses who are not actually involved in the accident might not stick around, so get their contact information as soon as possible. 

d) Exchange information with the other drivers. Texas requires that all drivers in auto accidents exchange identification and auto liability insurance, regardless of who is at fault. Everyone exchanges information. Take cellphone photos of the ID and auto insurance information so you can have it for your records. 

e) Take photos of the damage to all of the vehicles involved in the accident. If you are too injured to do this yourself you need to call a friend or family member to the scene so they can do this for you. Get photos of any skid-marks and debris left from the accident. Get photos of the roadway and traffic, and the direction you were coming from and traveling too just prior to the accident. Get photos of the roadway where the other drivers were coming from and heading to. Again, do not forget to get photos of the damage to all the vehicles as well. 

f) Cooperate with the police when they arrive. They will interview each driver separately regarding what happened in the accident. You want to let the officer know what happened so your version of the accident is in the police crash report. If you are injured let the officer know. 

g) If emergency personnel advise that you need to go to the hospital for your injuries you should follow their advice. They are trained to look for symptoms from trauma in auto accidents that may be life threatening. It is better to be safe than sorry. If advised that you should go to the ER then go get checked out. 

2) After you leave the scene of the accident: 

a) If you are injured in the accident you need to make an appointment with a medical facility to follow up on your injury.
