If you notice spots or other visual changes after an accident, you may have developed eye floaters or a more serious problem.
Eye floaters frequently appear in your field of vision as dark shapes or transparent threads. As your eyes move, these spots will move with them, eventually drifting out of your visual field. Eye floaters occur when the vitreous gel — the clear fluid that fills the majority of the eye — breaks loose and clumps together, resulting in dark flecks that interfere with normal vision. A car accident’s high impact can cause victims to develop eye floaters, which could be a symptom of a sight-threatening injury such as a retinal tear or retinal detachment.
COMPENSATION FOR FLOATER INJURIES IN A DALLAS CAR ACCIDENTTreatment for severe eye injuries is not cheap. The cost of repairing a detached retina or performing a vitrectomy to remove floaters is in the thousands of dollars.
Compensation is available if your eye injury was due to someone else’s negligence. If you suffered visual injuries in a Dallas car accident, speak with one of the Law Office of Doug Goyen’s experienced car accident attorneys to learn about your legal options. Our trial lawyers will thoroughly examine your case and seek the maximum amount of compensation for your injuries.

FLOATERS ARE CAUSED BY PVDS, RETINAL TEARS, AND RETINAL DETACHMENTThe retina is the light-sensitive membrane at the back of the eye that detects what you see and sends it to your brain. A car accident may cause a retinal tear by pulling part of the retina away from where it is anchored to the eye.
PVD (posterior vitreous detachment) is a condition that occurs when the vitreous membrane separates from the retina. This condition is defined as the separation of the posterior hyaloid membrane from the retina anywhere posterior to the vitreous base.
A retinal tear can progress to a sight-threatening condition known as retinal detachment. This happens when the entire retina separates from the tissue that supplies it with blood. The longer the retinal cells go without nourishment, the more likely it is that vision loss will occur.
One difficulty in diagnosing a retinal tear or retinal detachment is that neither condition is painful.
That is why it is critical to be aware of eye floaters. The most significant indicator of retinal trauma is the sudden onset of eye floaters. Other symptoms include flashes of light in one or both eyes, blurry vision, progressive loss of peripheral (side) vision, and a shadow-like appearance in the line of vision.
Eye floaters may not appear immediately following a car accident. However, if you notice them (or if they worsen, if you already have floaters), you should seek immediate medical attention.
Doctors can diagnose retinal detachment by shining a bright light through a tool into the back of your eye or possibly other diagnostic procedures.
