A hand injury is a serious and painful condition that may necessitate surgery or a lifetime of therapy. If your hand was injured as a result of someone else’s negligence, you may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit to be compensated for your injuries. The personal injury attorneys at the Law Office of Doug Goyen can assist you in obtaining compensation for your hand injury.
HAND INJURIES CAUSED BY THE TRAUMA OF AUTO ACCIDENTSCar accidents are frequently the cause of these. When a car accident occurs, the driver’s hands are usually on the steering wheel. The fingers, particularly the thumbs, can be twisted violently against the steering wheel, causing serious ligament damage or broken bones. If you have suffered any type of hand trauma in an accident, you may be able to receive compensation for your injuries by filing a personal injury lawsuit. A personal injury attorney can assist you in filing a claim.
Common general types of hand injuries caused by the trauma of motor vehicle accidents include:
Specific types of injuries that may be caused by the trauma of an auto accident include:
Tendon injury – mallet finger. A mallet finger is a finger deformity. It happens when the extensor tendon (the tendon that straightens the finger) is injured at the fingertip. The fingertip of a mallet finger droops and cannot straighten on its own. It is common to believe that the finger is jammed. The finger could be sore, swollen, or bruised. Blood occasionally collects beneath the nail. The nail can even become detached from beneath the skin fold at the nail’s base.
This is common when an object hits the tip of the finger or thumb. It can also happen as a result of a strong bending of the fingertip. This force tears the tendon that straightens the finger at the back of the finger. The force of the blow may even break off a piece of bone along with the tendon. As a result, the finger or thumb tip no longer straightens.
Crushing injury – compartment syndrome. Crushing injuries and trauma injuries in serious car accidents can result in compartment syndome of the hand. Compartment syndrome occurs when tissue pressure within a confined space rises to a level that impairs function. This rising pressure constricts arterial blood flow, limiting tissue blood flow and resulting in a progressive loss of blood flow to keep the tissue alive. If left untreated, the pressure and subsequent loss of blood flow lead to tissue necrosis and irreversible loss of function.
Thumb injury – Skier’s thumb (acute injury). A skier’s thumb is an injury to a thumb ligament. The ligament is located on the inside of the thumb’s first knuckle and serves to stabilize the thumb at that location. The condition is known as Skier’s Thumb because this ligament is frequently injured in skiers who fall with their ski pole still in hand. It can also happen in car accidents when the thumb becomes entangled in the steering wheel.
The ligament can be partially torn, completely torn, or stretched, and it can be associated with a small fracture of the thumb bones where the ligament is attached.
Hand Fractures. Hand fractures can occur at any time, but they are more common in certain situations. When the hand is subjected to extreme pressure or a blunt impact, one of the small bones in the hand may be broken. Car accidents, motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, truck accidents, and pedestrian accidents are all common causes of fractured hands in motor vehicle collisions.
The type of fracture treatment required is determined by the type of fracture. Hand fractures include the following:
A simple fracture. If the bone has not been displaced, the hand can usually be placed in a cast or splint and left to heal on its own over a few weeks. Exercises will be required to maintain mobility and prevent stiffness.
Fractures that are displaced or compound fractures. If the bone or bones are out of place, they may need to be surgically realigned. Pins, plates, and/or screws may be used to keep the bones in place while they heal. This can take several weeks or more to heal and will necessitate rehabilitation.
Bones crushed. The bones in the hand are delicate and can be crushed to the point of irreparable damage. In this case, surgery would be required to attempt bone reconstruction using bone grafts. The recovery process is much more time-consuming, requiring months of healing and rehabilitation.
